Key Takeaways From the 2020 Election: Georgia

  • News
  • November 04, 2020

For Georgia businesses, the election results largely add up to the status quo as far as state policy is concerned. With 158 out of 159 counties reporting as of this writing, battleground Georgia is still too close to call for President Donald Trump or Vice President Joe Biden, as well as Senator David Perdue, given technical difficulties in two metropolitan Atlanta counties, Fulton and DeKalb.

Senator Kelly Loeffler (R) will face Reverend Raphael Warnock (D) in a January 2021 runoff election. Republicans maintain control of the General Assembly. Republicans lost one seat in the state Senate (33-21) and one net loss in the state House (104-76), assuming Rep. Deb Silcox (R-Sandy Springs) maintains her existing lead and is not impacted by the additional ballots in the aforementioned metropolitan counties.

Republicans will control both chambers of the legislature when they convene Monday, January 11, 2021 for the 156th General Assembly. Republicans also control all statewide elected offices.
